Bueckers, Edwards Named WBCA All-Americans
CLEVELAND – UConn women's basketball redshirt junior Paige Bueckers and senior Aaliyah Edwards were named to the 2024 WBCA NCAA Division I Coaches' All-Amerca team, as announced by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Thursday.
UConn is the only program with multiple players on the All-America team. With the WBCA All-America honor, the duo is eligible for UConn's Huskies of Honor.
Bueckers and Edwards have led UConn to its 23rd NCAA Final Four appearance, doing so with just eight available players and numerous season-ending injuries to the roster.
After missing the 2022-23 season to injury, Bueckers has stepped up an often played out of position for the Huskies. She leads UConn with 22.0 points per game, 53 blocks and 86 steals. She is one of the most efficient guards in the nation, shooting a .534/.418/834 split. Bueckers was named the 2023-24 BIG EAST Player and Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was also named an AP and USBWA First Team All-American. She was selected as the BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player and NCAA Tournament Portland 3 Region Most Outstanding Player.
Bueckers has totaled 837 points this season, the second most by a Husky in a single season all-time. She was also a 2021 WBCA All-American.
Edwards has been one of UConn's most consistent players since coming to Storrs. She is averaging career highs with 17.6 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, leading the team in rebounding. Edwards ranks 14th nationally with a .595 field-goal percentage and 13th nationally with 18 double-doubles. She was named a USBWA Second Team All-American. Edwards was also an All-BIG EAST First Team selection and tabbed to the NCAA Tournament Portland 3 Region All-Tournament Team.
Last week, Edwards notched her 1,000th career rebound, becoming just the sixth Husky all-time with 1,800 points and 1,000 boards.
Bueckers and Edwards were both named Wooden Award All-Americans on Tuesday.
The third-seeded Huskies (33-5) face No. 1-seed Iowa (33-4) in the Final Four on Friday at 9:30 p.m. in Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland. The game will air on ESPN, the UConn Sports Network from Learfield and Westwood One.
