Bueckers, Strong Earn BIG EAST Weekly Honors
STORRS, Conn. – After leading the No. 2 UConn women's basketball team (3-0) to its first ranked win of the season, redshirt senior Paige Bueckers and freshman Sarah Strong were named the BIG EAST Player and Freshman of the Week, respectively, on Monday.
In a 69-58 win over No. 14 North Carolina, Bueckers scored a season-high 29 points on 57.1% shooting. She added four rebounds, four assists and two steals and had no turnovers.
Bueckers scored 16 points in the first quarter, including a buzzer beater in the last second. She is leading the Huskies with 21.3 points per game and leads the nation with a 12.0 assist-turnover ratio.
Strong had her first career double-double vs. the Tar Heels. She notched 14 points and had personal bests with 13 rebounds, six assists and five blocks.
This is the second straight week Strong has been the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week.
Bueckers and Strong were selected as the conference's preseason Player and Freshman of the Year.
UConn returns to Gampel Pavilion to host FDU (4-1) on Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Huskies will celebrate the ruby anniversary of Auriemma and Chris Dailey and honor their impact and legacies over the last 40 seasons in Storrs.
