No. 2 Huskies to Open Season vs. BU
STORRS, Conn. – The second-ranked UConn women's basketball team (0-0) begins the 2024-25 season against Boston University (1-0) Thursday at 7 p.m. in the XL Center. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network (97-9 ESPN).
Thursday is UConn's Huskies & Heroes game. Fans can show a military or veteran ID at the XL Center box office for $5 tickets on the day of the game.
UConn is 42-8 all-time in season openers. The Huskies have won 28 straight season-opening games.
Boston University opened the season with a 60-48 win over Northeastern on Monday. Alex Giannaros led the Terriers with 23 points.
UConn is 8-4 all-time vs. BU. This is the first meeting between the Huskies and Terriers since Nov. 2013.
The Huskies beat Division II Fort Hays State, 89-49, in an exhibition last Sunday. Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers led UConn with 27 points on 12-for-14 shooting at nine rebounds. Sophomore Ashlynn Shade added 15 points and four steals while newcomer grad student Kaitlyn Chen notched 14 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Bueckers was selected as the preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year, a preseason AP All-American and to the Lieberman Award and Naismith Award watch lists. She is joined on the Naismith list by redshirt junior Azzi Fudd, who is also preseason All-BIG EAST and on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award watch list.
Sophomores KK Arnold and Ashlynn Shade were also named preseason All-BIG EAST while graduate student Kaitlyn Chen is an honorable mention selection. Sarah Strong was selected as the conference's preseason Freshman of the Year and to the Cheryl Miller Award watch list.
UConn Athletics will celebrate head coach Geno Auriemma and associate head coach Chris Dailey's 40th season in Storrs in 2024-25 and honor their legacies and major milestones with several initiatives throughout the year.
The Huskies' primary celebration will take place during UConn's sold-out game vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Gampel Pavilion. All student-athletes who played for Auriemma and Dailey are invited back to campus as the program celebrates their four decades of their success.
Fans can tune into Setting the Standard, a five-part docuseries that tells the story of Auriemma and Dailey's 40 years at UConn. The first three episodes are available to stream now at UConnPlus.tv, with the final two episodes releasing Nov. 12 and Nov. 19.
The Huskies were picked as the BIG EAST Conference favorites in the Preseason Coaches' Poll.
UConn is ranked second in both the AP and WBCA preseason polls.
