No. 2-Seed UConn Faces South Dakota State in NCAA Second Round
STORRS, Conn. – The second-seeded and third-ranked UConn women's basketball team (32-3) takes on No. 10-seeded and 24th-ranked South Dakota State (30-3) in the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship Second Round on Monday at 8 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion. The game will air on ESPN and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (FOX Sports 97-9).
This is UConn's 36th overall and straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to the 1988-89 season. UConn is 137-24 overall in the NCAA Tournament, which is the winningest record in the sport. The Huskies are 31-2 all-time in the Second Round and have won 30 straight Second Round games.
UConn opened the NCAA Tournament with a 103-34 win over Arkansas State in the First Round. Graduate student Azzi Fudd, making her return to the Tournament for the first time in two seasons, led the Huskies with 27 points, seven assists and six steals. Freshman Sarah Strong notched her fourth straight double-double of the postseason with 20 points and 12 rebounds while adding five assists and five blocks.
UConn scored 34 points off turnovers and had 41 fast break points. The Huskies had 13 blocks, the most by UConn in an NCAA Tournament game.
This is the first-ever meeting between UConn and South Dakota State.
South Dakota State beat No. 7 Oklahoma State, 74-68, in the NCAA First Round. The Jackrabbits have won 20 straight games. This season, Brooklyn Meyer leads South Dakota State with 17.4 points per game. Head coach Aaron Johnston is in his 25th season at South Dakota State.
