HookC Sweeps Georgetown

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (17-17, 5-4 BIG EAST) earned a series sweep against Georgetown (12-23, 1-5 BIG EAST) with an 8-3 win on Sunday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.

LHP Charlie West was phenomenal for the Huskies with his second start of the week (5 IP 0 ER 8 K vs. Hofstra), going a career-high 6.0 innings, allow one earned run and struck out a career-high 10 in his second win of the week.

The Huskies jumped in the second with a two-out, two run double for Grant MacArthur

After an error and an RBI double for Georgetown in the fourth, the Hoyas had second and third and one out against West. The LHP got a pop up to third and a strikeout to keep the Huskies in front, 2-1.

The offense helped their starting pitcher out by scoring a run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Sam Biller and then plated three more in the fifth inning to make it 6-1.

Caleb Shpur notched an RBI single in the frame while Aidan Dougherty delivered a two-run single to cap the three-run fifth.

In the seventh, the Hoyas recorded back-to-back hits to open the frame and spell the end of the day for West.

RHP Ian Cooke came out of the pen and recorded a strikeout and double play to limit the Hoyas to a run in the frame.

The Huskies immediately responded with a solo home run from Caleb Shpur that left fielder Kavi Caster nearly went up and robbed, but the ball hit the side of his glove and fell into the UConn bullpen for Shpur's second home run of the season.

Cooke finished out the game with his second three-inning save of the weekend and his third save in BIG EAST play this season.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Boston College to take on the Eagles on Tuesday, April 15 at 4 p.m.
