HookC Swept in Doubleheader at Campbell
LILLINGTON, N.C. - The UConn baseball team (6-10) lost a pair of leads in both ends of the doubleheader to lose the series at Campbell on Saturday afternoon at Perry Stadium.
In game one, the Huskies led 6-5 entering the bottom of the eighth inning but ultimately fell 7-6 in 10 innings against the Camels.
In game two, UConn led 5-1 entering the bottom of the sixth inning but a six run sixth inning lifted Campbell to the series win.
Outfielder Aidan Dougherty drove in a pair of runs in game one while Greg Shaw III shined with 4.0 strong innings out of the pen. Brady Afthim was sensational, keeping the game tied in the eighth with the bases loaded and no outs. The Windham, Maine native recorded a pair of strikeouts and a force out at home plate to get out of trouble. In the ninth inning, the UConn closer stranded a runner at third with one out with a strikeout and a pop up to first.
The Huskies though did not score a run after the fifth inning and were walked off on in the bottom of the 10th.
In game two, LHP Cayden Suchy made his first career start and was strong. The freshman didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning when a Camels hitter hit the umpire on a ground ball.
Leading 2-1 in the sixth, the Huskies plated a run on a wild pitch and a two-run single from Beau Root to take a 5-1 lead.
Cambell immediately responded with six runs scored in the frame and the Huskies were unable to mount a comeback effort.
Next up, the Huskies head to Duke for a Tuesday, March 18 contest at 4 p.m.
