10-Run 5th Propels HookC in Home Opener

STORRS, CT - A 10-run fifth inning propelled the UConn baseball team (5-8) to an 11-1 run-rule victory against LIU (5-12) in the home opener at Elliot Ballpark on Tuesday afternoon.

The Huskies first 11 batters reached base as part of the double-digit frame with a total of 16 total batters hitting in the frame.

With the game tied 1-1, Tyler Minick broke the tie with a 461 foot home run that flew way over the bullpens in left field. The home run was the sixth of the year for the sophomore third baseman.

Junior Ryan Daniels immediately followed with a blast of his own to make it 4-1. 

Sam Biller, Connor Lane, Caleb Shpur and Rob Rispoli all registered RBI singles in the inning. 

Greg Shaw made the start for UConn and pitched a season-high 3.0 innings with just one run allowed and tied a season-high with two strikeouts. 

RHP Thomas Galusha had a milestone day by earning his first career win out of the pen by going 2.0 innings and retiring all six batters he faced. The Middebury, CT native notched his first career strikeout and finished with three on the day. 

RHP Frank Spirito IV made his collegiate debut after redshirting last year due to Tommy John Surgery. The Bristol, Conn. native retired all three batters he faced in a scoreless sixth inning.

Sean Finn finished out the win with a scoreless seventh inning.

Next up, the Huskies begin their 11-day, eight game spring break trip with a three-game series at Campbell in Buies Creek, N.C.

Game Notes

  • The Huskies scored 10 runs in an inning for the first time in 2025. The last time UConn scored 10 runs in an inning was the second inning against Hofstra on April 24, 2024
  • The UConn pitching staff recorded season-lows in runs (one), hits (one) and walks (one) in the win.
  • The Huskies offense registered a season-high three hit by pitches while tying a season-high with seven walks (Penn State).
  • UConn is 5-0 in home openers at Elliot Ballpark and 67-14 all-time at their new park. 
  • Tyler Minick hit his sixth home run of the season on Tuesday. He is the fastest Husky to reach six home runs to begin the year since Isaac Feldstein hit his sixth home run in game No. 14. Minick missed the first three games with injury.
