HookC Rallies, Wins Seventh-Straight In Extras

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (20-17, 7-4 BIG EAST) trailed 4-2 entering the ninth inning but rallied to win its seventh-straight game, 5-4, in extra innings against the Seton Hall Pirates (14-24, 2-6 BIG EAST) on Friday night at Elliot Ballpark.

Down two with three outs to work with, Caleb Shpur beat out an infield single to lead off the home half of the ninth. Ryan Daniels followed with a hit by pitch to place runners at first and second with no outs. Shpur and Daniels pulled off a double steal on a strikeout to Tyler Minick to put runners at second and third with one out.

Aidan Dougherty made it a one-run game with an RBI ground out to third. With the Huskies down to their final out, tri-captain Bryan Padillla delivered an RBI single on his third hit of the game to tie the game at 4-4. 

RHP Sean Finn returned to the mound in the 10th after two scoreless frames and struck out the side to keep the game tied.

In the bottom of the 10th, Connor Lane notched his third hit of the game, a double, to open the frame. Beau Root ripped a single into right field to place runners at the corners with no outs. 

Shortstop Rob Rispoli capped the magical comeback with an RBI single to center to clinch the series and earn the seventh-straight victory for the Huskies.

Center fielder Caleb Shpur had a great night with three hits at the plate and two spectacular catches in centerfield. The East Canaan, Conn. native made a leaping grab to save a run in the top of the second and followed it up with a sprawling grab in right center to keep two runs off the board. 

Seton Hall took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first for the second-straight day off an RBI double from AJ Soldra and solo homer from Kevin Milewski.

The Huskies drew a run closer with an RBI single from Shpur in the second.

Trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Connor Lane hit a solo home run to left field, his third of the year, to make it a 3-2 deficit. 

Milewski hit his second home run of the night for the Pirates in the seventh to push the lead to 4-2. 

The Huskies and the Pirates will wrap up the series on Saturday with a 1:05 p.m. start. 

Game Notes

  • The Huskies won their first game of the year when trailing after eight innings (1-15).
  • UConn is 2-1 in extra inning games this season.
  • Connor Lane recorded his second-straight three hit game with four of his six hits going for extra bases. 
  • Bryan Padilla notched his first three-hit game of the season and 12th multi-hit game overall.
