BSB Win Streak Ended At 13
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (26-18) lost to Rutgers, 13-11, to end its 13-game win streak on Tuesday evening at Elliot Ballpark.
A 10-run top of the fourth inning for the Scarlet Knights proved to be the difference with Rutgers sending 13 batters to the plate and taking a 13-9 lead.
UConn got off to a great start with the first six batters of the game reaching for the Huskies. Rob Rispoli singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Caleb Shpur that he reached first base on a dropped ball by the first baseman.
Ryan Daniels followed with a walk to load the bases. Sophomore Tyler Minick delivered a two-run single to get the Huskies on the board.
Aidan Dougherty followed with a ground-rule, two-run double to make it 4-0 and quickly scored on a two-run homer for Beau Root.
Up 6-3 in the third, Sam Biller drove in a run on an RBI double and scored on a two-out, two-run single from Rob Rispoli to make it 9-3.
RHP Kyle Peters made his first career start and pitched a career-high 3.0 innings for the Huskies.
After the 10-run frame for the Scarlet Knights, Ryan Daniels hits his 10th home run of the year, a solo home run, to cut the deficit to 13-10.
In the sixth, Matt Garbowski delivered a sacrifice fly to make it a 13-11 ballgame.
LHP JT Caruso (career-high 2.0 IP), RHP Sean Finn (2.1 IP) and RHP Brady Afthim (1.0 IP) combined to throw 5.1 shutout innings but the UConn offense was unable to come from behind.
The Huskies threatened in the ninth with a walk to Daniels and single from Minick to place runners at first and second with no outs. But back-to-back strikeouts and a ground out to third ended the rally.
UConn looks to bounce back tomorrow night at 6:05 p.m. against Rhode Island at Elliot Ballpark.
