HookC Shuts Out Kansas State, 4-0

STORRS, Conn. - With a national audience tuned in on CBS Sports Network, the UConn baseball team (17-17) shut out Kansas State (21-14), 4-0, on a beautiful Tuesday night at Elliot Ballpark.

Six pitchers combined for the fourth shutout of the season for the UConn pitching staff.

LHP Garrett Coe started the evening off with four shutout frames that included just a pair of hits, one walk and four strikeouts.

UConn grabbed the lead in the third with a pair of two-out RBI singles from Paul Tammaro and Korey Morton to make it 2-0. 

LHP Joe Cinnella earned the victory out of the bullpen with two shutout innings. The Mahwah, N.J. native was able to escape trouble with runners at first and second and one out in the fifth with a nice bunt play that Cinnella was able to jump off the mound and get the lead runner at third. He followed it up by coaxing a ground ball to short to end the threat.

In the sixth, catcher Matt Garbowski gave the Huskies some insurance with a solo homer to right to make it 3-0. 

RHP Jack Sullivan came out of the pen in the seventh with a runner on and no outs and got a 5-4-3 double play on the second pitch he threw. LHP Braden Quinn then followed and pitched 1.1 shutout innnings with a pair of strikeouts.

UConn added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth on an error and Brady Afthim closed it out with a scoreless ninth to clinch a 4-0 win.

Next up, the Huskies travel to Boston to face Boston College on Wednesday, April 17 at 3:02 p.m. The game can be seen on ACCN+ or hear it on MIXLR.

Game Notes

  • The Huskies have won 8 of 10 and have reached the .500 mark for the first time since the team was 2-2.
  • Matt Garbowski hit his first home run at Elliot Ballpark this season and was his first round tripper since February 25 at California
  • UConn is 5-8 this season against Power 5 Conference team with wins against the ACC (Louisville), SEC (Auburn), Pac-12 (UCLA) and Big 10 (Rutgers) and Big 12 (Kansas State).
  • UConn finishes its 12-game home stand with an 8-4 record.
