HookC Scores 30 Runs in DH Sweep, Win Streak at 12
QUEENS, N.Y. - The UConn baseball team (25-17, 10-4 BIG EAST) outscored St. John's (20-19, 6-5 BIG EAST), 30-14 in the doubleheader at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Friday.
The doubleheader sweep clinches a third-straight series win for the Huskies and pushes the season-long win streak to 12 games.
The Huskies scored 13 runs on a season-high 20 hits and followed it up with 17 runs on 19 hits in the second game of the day.
UConn jumped out to a 7-1 lead in game one through the first three innings. Ryan Daniels registered an RBI double in the first and smoked his fifth home run in the last four games in the third inning.
Sam Biller capped a five-run third inning with a bases clearing, three-run double. St. John's rallied in the fourth with a six-run frame to even the score at 7-7.
Biller answered in the fifth with a two-out, solo home run, his sixth of the year to retake the lead, 8-7.
After the Red Storm tied it in the fifth, Tyler Minick hit his 13th home run of the year in the sixth, a solo shot, to make it 9-8. Tri-captain Matt Garbowski added to the lead with a two-run double to make it 11-8.
RHP Greg Shaw III settled the game down from the mound with 5.2 innings of one run ball to earn the victory out of the pen.
Tyler Minick added his fifth hit of the day in the ninth, an RBI single, an Aidan Dougherty delivered an RBI doubled to finish the scoring at 13-8.
Dougherty continued his strong play in game two with four more RBI doubles as part of a five-hit game in game two.
The Huskies scored in seven of their nine at bats in game two. Four Huskies had three hits or more in the winning effort with Dougherty and Caleb Shpur collecting five hits and Rob Rispoli and Ryan Daniels recording three knocks.
Tyler Minick hit his 14th home run of the season with a two-run homer in the second inning.
RHP Tommy Ellisen earned the win with 6.0 strong innings on the mound that featured six strikeouts. LHP JT Caruso and RHP Kyle Peters each logged scoreless frames.
Next up, the Huskies will look to keep it rolling on Sunday, April 27 at 1:05 p.m. in the series finale.
