HookC Splits DH to Win 12th-Straight BIG EAST Series

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J.  – The UConn baseball team (27-19, 12-3 BIG EAST) clinched its 12th-straight BIG EAST series by splitting a doubleheader against Seton Hall (22-26, 5-10 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Mike Sheppard Sr. Stadium.

Game 1

In game one, the Pirates took an early 1-0 lead on an RBI double from Danny Melnick that just popped out of the glove of Caleb Shpur on a great diving attempt in deep right centerfield.

The Huskies responded with back-to-back doubles from Bryan Padilla and Maddix Dalena to even the score at 1-1 in the second.

Lefthander Garrett Coe put together another superb start on the bump for the Huskies with 8.0 of work that featured just three hits allowed and seven strikeouts.

With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Coe faced runners at second and third with one out. Coe notched a strikeout on the 12th pitch of the at bat to Joey Calabretti and got a fly out to left to escape trouble and keep the game tied.

In the seventh, Jake Studley walked and stole second with one-out in the frame. But a strikeout and long fly out to center ended the threat for the Huskies.

With a runner at third and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Andrew Bianco hit a base hit down the first base line to win it for the Pirates, 2-1.

The win for Seton Hall snapped a nine-game win streak for the Huskies and a 12-game win streak for UConn against Seton Hall, dating back to 2017.

Game 2

In the rubber game of the series, the Huskies received a big boost in the lineup from freshman Tyler Minick.

The Reading, Pa. native registered his first career three-hit that featured an RBI double in the third and RBI two-bagger in the fifth to make it 2-0 Huskies.

In the seventh, the UConn designated hitter delivered an RBI single to make it a three-run for UConn, 3-0.

UConn starter Ian Cooke was marvelous for the Huskies pitching 8.2 shutout innings for the Huskies before allowing a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth.

Cooke controlled the majority of the contest with just three hits allowed and zero walks entering the ninth inning. The New Milford, native punched out nine batters in his season-high 8.2 innings of work.

Jake Studley and Korey Morton provided key insurance with RBI singles in the eighth and ninth innings to make it 5-0 Huskies.

Brady Afthim came out of the pen to get the final out of the ballgame, a sliding catch from right fielder Jake Studley to seal the road series win.

Next up, the Huskies will head to Brookline, Mass. on Tuesday, May 7 to face off against the Northeastern Huskies at 1 p.m.
