HookC Captures DH Sweep vs. Butler
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn baseball team (32-18, 16-4 BIG EAST) notched a doubleheader sweep against the Butler Bulldogs (14-36, 3-14 BIG EAST) on Saturday afternoon at Elliot Ballpark.
The Huskies defeated the Bulldogs 18-4 in game one and followed it up with an 11-6 win in game two.
In the first game of the twin bill, the Huskies jumped out to a 9-0 lead after three innings. UConn scored six runs in its first at bat with Grant MacArthur highlighting the frame with a two-out grand slam home run to cap the six-run first.
MacArthur added a solo homer in the third to collect his third multi-homer game of the season. The UConn first baseman/designated hitter finished his day with a two-run double to set a season-high for a Husky with seven RBI in a game this season.
Ryan Daniels collected four hits, scored four runs and drove in three in the victory while Tyler Minick and Caleb Shpur both registered three-hits in game one. Rob Rispoli reached five times with a base hit and four walks.
Oliver Pudvar earned his first win since April 4 against Creighton with 6.0 strong innings, allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out six.
Kyle Peters recorded his first career save by tying a career-best with 3.0 innings of work and set a new career-high with six punch outs.
In game two, Tommy Ellisen settled into the ballgame after a three-run first inning. The RHP followed by retiring 14 batters in a row and earned the victory with a season-high 6.2 innings, just one unearned run after the first and struck out four.
The Huskies immediately responded to a three-run deficit with Ryan Daniels launching a three-run homer to right to even up the score, 3-3. Daniels untied the game in the third with a two-run shot to right again to make it 5-3.
Matt Garbowski hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot, in the fourth inning to extend the UConn lead to 7-3.
Daniels capped his tremendous day with a two-run single in the sixth inning to drive in his seventh RBI of the game and his 10 RBI of the doubleheader.
Brady Afthim closed the ballgame out with 1.2 shutout frames with no hits allowed and three strikeouts.
