HookC Clinches Series at Miami
MIAMI - The UConn baseball team (4-7) clinched a series win at Miami (11-5), 12-8, on Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
The Huskies plated eight two-out runs including five of them in the eighth inning to buld a 12-5 cushion.
UConn started the game well with its best first inning of the season. The Huskies entered the night with two runs scored in the first inning through the first 10 games.
After a lead off walk to Rob Rispoli, back-to-back doubles from Tyler Minick and Ryan Daniels pushed the Huskies ahead, 2-0. Daniels then swiped third and scored on a throwing error to put a three-spot on the board in the opening frame.
Miami responded with five unanswered runs in the first four innings to take a 5-3 lead to the fifth.
The Huskies punched back with a two-out rally in the fifth. With no one on base and two outs, Tyler Minick drew a walk and scored on a Daniels single to right field that was booted by the Hurricanes' right fielder.
Grant MacArthur followed with a game-tying RBI double and tri-captain Bryan Padilla gave UConn the lead back with an RBI single to center.
The Huskies created breathing room in the eighth with Minick picking up an RBI single with the bases loaded on a well placed swinging bunt. Daniels worked a bases loaded walk and MacArthur dealt an early dagger with a two-run single.
With two strikes on Padilla, MacArthur took off and drew a throw to second to allow Daniels to score from third and make it 12-5.
LHP Cayden Suchy earned his first career win with 3.1 innings pitched out of the pen.
Greg Shaw III tossed 1.1 hitless innings out of the pen and Brady Afthim closed out the victory by recording the final two outs of the game.
UConn will look for the sweep on Sunday, March 9 at 1 p.m. in the series finale.
