Track & Field Dominates in UConn Husky Challenge
STORRS, Conn.- UConn Track & Field started their indoor season opener this week, sweeping the UConn Husky Challenge that wrapped up Friday evening. On the men's side, the Huskies scored 95 points to defeat UMass, AIC, and Yale. On the women's side, UConn triumphed over UMass with 76 points.
Quote from Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan:
"UConn track and field had a great Husky Challenge. We dominated the fields today, with true grit and competitive from all competitors. Great to see all of the hard work from fall semester put into action. Tomorrow, we're excited for Chloe Thomas, Jenna Zydanowicz, and Caroline Webb to compete in Boston in the 5000 meter race."
Heptathlon Notes:
- Diarmuid O'Connor and Joshua Mooney took home the first two spots in the heptathlon. O'Connor finished with 5,543 points, and Mooney with 5,320.
- Max Ringwall set a heptathlon personal best with a score of 4,908.
- Dar Jankovic and Michael Johnson also set personal bests in the heptathalon with 4,812 and 4,672 respectively.
Field Notes:
- Enaji Muhammad took first place in high jump at 2.05m in his UConn debut.
- The Huskies swept the first four slots in the men's long jump, led by Kasey Savage who led the way, jumping 7.44m. Marc Morrison, Richmond Kwaateng, and William Wiafe claimed the next three spots. I
- In the women's long jump, A'Liyah Thomas kicked off her senior season with the longest jump on the women's side at 6.19m.
- Travis Roux took home first place in the men's weight throw, with s throw of 20.45m. Alex Krause set a personal best of 17.59m, finishing in third.
- On the women's side, Natalia Surdej finished first with a throw of 18.82. Emily Alty took home third at 16.85m, and Gabriela DeFelice set a personal best of 15.95m, finishing in 5th.
- Nicholas Connolly, Garrett McHeard, and Jack Foster swept the top three spots in men's shotput, with Connolly leading the way at 16.05m. On the women's side, DeFelice took the top spot with a throw of 12.99m, a personal best.
- Kyle Johnson won the men's triple jump with a personal best 15.78m, and Zayin Roe took first on the women's side at 12.34m
- Patrick Oatman finished first in the men's pole vault at 4.90m
Track Notes:
- A'liyah Thomas pulled away in the women's 60 meter hurdles finals with a time of 8.50. Maegan Feeney finished in third, with a personal best of 8.91. On the men's side, Terrel Williams won the 60m hurdles with a time of 7.72
- Jaia James won the 60m with a personal best time of 7.59, and Damon Simpson won on the men's side at 6.92.
- James also took home first, with another personal best in the women's 300m at 40.45. Noble Gongon finished in first on the men's 300 side, clocking in at 35.61.
- Anna Connors won the women's 500m with a time of 1:16.96, and Mekhi Stone won the men's 500 with a personal best of 1:05.06
- Jessica Starr took home first in the women's 600m at 1:37.18, and freshman Del Lindsay won the men's 600m at 1:25.38.
- The Huskies performed well in the longer distance events, with Caroline Rice winning the 1000m, and Megan Minicucci and Griffin Mandirola sweeping the women's and men's 3000m, respectively.
- The 4x400m teams wrapped up a great two days for the Huskies, as the team of Raquel Rosa, Harriett Barber, Jessica Starr, and Anna Connors won the relay with a time of 3:55.16, with Connors holding off UMass with a strong kick in the final meters. The men's team of Lindsay, Stone, Gabriel Cuffey, and Andrew Ferguson finished the relay at 3:22.36, over four seconds faster than Umass.
National Notes: Going into tomorrow's meets, three Huskies set marks that are current nation leaders:
- Kyle Johnson in the triple jump (15.78m)
- Diarmuid O'Connor in the heptathlon (5,543 points)
- Travis Roux in the weight throw (20.45m)
O'Connor's heptathlon mark is the national best for Ireland.
Up Next: Thomas, Zydanowicz, and Webb will compete in the 5000m in the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener tomorrow afternoon in Boston.
