Track & Field Set for UConn Husky Challenge
STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's track & field teams prepare for the UConn Husky Challenge in the newly renovated Hugh S. Greer Field House. UConn hosts University of Massachusetts, University of Massachusetts Lowell, and Holy Cross for the two-day event on Thursday, Dec. 7 and Friday, Dec. 8.
"We're actually very excited to be hosting a little home meet," said Track & Field/Cross Country head coach Beth Alford-Sullivan. "We've hosted the multi-events portion in the past, but with the new facility this year we decided to add the running events also the other field events as well. We're thrilled to be doing it and it's a great way to end the semester and a good opportunity to compete and showcase our new facility. We've invited some alumni back and also will be presenting our BIG EAST Championship ring ceremony on Friday. It's going to be a full, fun couple of days."
The meet will begin with the multi-event athletes on Thursday with the women's pentathlon along with the men's heptathlon. Then, on Friday, the meet will feature the field events first, followed by the track events.
Both teams are coming off stellar seasons in 2022-23 as both programs continued their conference championship win streak at the BIG EAST Championships. The men finished off a fifth-straight BIG EAST Championship in the indoor and outdoor season while the women completed a fourth-straight BIG EAST Championship. The men brought 12 athletes to the NCAA First Round qualifiers with three who qualified for the NCAA Championships. The women had six athletes at the NCAA First Round qualifiers. In total, there were six broken school records between both programs (4 from men, 2 from women).
The Huskies will look to continue where they left off as they head into the 2023-24 season bringing on 13 newcomers on the men's side and five newcomers on the women's side.
The UConn Husky Challenge begins at noon on Dec. 7 and begins at 10 a.m. on Dec. 8.
