Three Huskies Advance to Nationals at NCAA East Preliminaries
2023 NCAA East Prelims Final Results
Jacksonville, Fla. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's track & field teams finished strong at the NCAA East Preliminaries at the University of North Florida as three UConn athletes qualify for the national track & field championships in Austin, Texas.
Those three athletes; Marc Morrison, Colin Winkler, and Wellington Ventura put up great performances to place them in great position for the national stage in a couple weeks.
Winkler in the javelin throw would finish with a monstrous throw of 70.69m placing 10th out of 48 finishers. Then, Morrison in the long jump would qualify with a 7.52m result taking 11th out of 45 finishers.
On the track, Ventura qualified for nationals in the quarterfinals of the 400m hurdles with a time of 50.86 seconds taking 7th out of 24 finishers. Ventura took second place in the first round in his heat and then finished first in the quarterfinals in his heat.
Other strong performers included Terrel Williams who advanced to the quarterfinals in the 110-meter hurdles with a personal best time of 13.58 seconds in the first round but wouldn't place in the quarterfinals. Also, Mahamed Sharif advanced to the quarterfinals in the 800 meters running a time of 1:49.15 in the first round and would come up just short to qualify with a time of 1:50.53 in the quarterfinals.
Highlighting the women's side included Chloe Thomas who advanced to the quarterfinals in the 1500 meters with a time of 4:20.39 and then would place just short of qualifying in the quarterfinals running in 4:20.43. Jasmine Barrow would also come up a place short of qualifying in the triple jump as she would finish with a jump of 13.04m.
The Huskies will next look ahead to the NCAA track & field championships on Wednesday, June 7 to Saturday, June 10 at University of Texas in Austin, Texas.
At NCAA East First Round
Men:
Connor Hayford in the Javelin finished with a personal best result of 65.78m and Tanner Jameson threw for a result of 58.49m
Kevin Cawley in the 3,000m Steeplechase quarterfinals finished in 9:06.01 taking 32nd out of 48 finishers and Christopher Lepore finished with a time of 9:18.78
James Maniscalco in the 5,000 meters semifinals ran a time of 14:41.79
Women:
A'liyah Thomas in the Long Jump took 25th out of 48 with a mark of 5.99m. Jasmine Barrow finished with a mark of 5.75m. In the 100m hurdles, Thomas ran a time of 13.68 seconds
Natalia Surdej in the hammer throw with a result of 57.29m
Patricia Mroczkowski in the High Jump finished with a result of 1.72m placing 17th out of 43 finishers
