UConn Tennis Programs Honored with ITA Academic Awards
ITA ACADEMIC AWARDS ANNOUNCEMENT
STORRS, Conn. - For the sixth-straight season, the UConn women's tennis program has been recognized by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) as an All-Academic team for achieving a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2019-20 season. In addition, eight student-athletes garnered ITA Scholar-Athlete honors for achieving a grade point average of 3.50 or higher for the academic year.
"I am very proud of our teams and players for these academic awards," stated Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall. "It shows how they have successfully balanced and prioritized their academics, while still performing at a high level on the tennis courts. They are great representatives of our program, athletic department, and the University."
Recent graduate Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) earned the honor for her third-straight season at UConn. Rising senior Elizabeth Kozyi (Alexandria, Va.) also earned a spot for the third-straight season.
Rising juniors Luciana Rabines (Barcelona, Spain) and Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) were honored for the second-straight season. Classmate Julieanne Bou (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) earned the honor for the first time in her career.
Rising sophomores Caroline Cook (Naples, Fla.), Kyra Foster (Fort Wayne, Ind.) and Denise Lai (Setauket, N.Y.) earned the honor after their rookie seasons. All eight Huskies were also honored on the American Athletic Conference All-Academic team.
The UConn men's team had a pair of honorees in rising senior Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China), who earned the award for the third-straight year, and rising junior Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.), honored for the second-straight year.
Earlier this summer, the women's tennis program, was honored with a NCAA Public Recognition Award for outstanding academic performance for the 12-consecutive time, while the men's tennis program was recognized for the sixth-straight year and seventh time overall.
To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, one must meet the following requirements:
- have a grade point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and
- be listed on the institutional eligibility form.
To be named an ITA All-Academic Team, programs must meet the following requirements:
- have a team grade point average of 3.2 or above (on a 4.00 scale),
- all student-athletes included should be listed on the institutional eligibility form, and
- all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.
