Huskies Lose Tight Match to Bucknell; Fall at Saint Joseph's

STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's tennis team hit the road to Pennsylvania this weekend to take on Saint Joseph's and Bucknell in a pair of dual matches.  The Huskies fell to Saint Joseph's 4-0 and lost a tough 4-3 decision to the Bison.

In Friday's loss to Saint Joseph's, the Huskies did get a doubles victory from junior Yili Zheng (Shanghai, China) and freshman Rami Scheetz (Cedar Rapids, Ia.) posted a 6-1 win over Nickolas Frisk and Johnnie Massart.

On Saturday, the Huskies got some strong singles performances but fell a point short of their first win this spring.  Senior Evan Powell (Guilford, Conn.) got UConn off to a hot start with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 over Guillermo Torres.  Zheng was winning a three-set battle with Cooper Bradshaw at No. 3 when Bradshaw retired in the third.  Zheng won the first set 6-3, lost th second 7-6 (5) and was up 3-2 in the third.

Freshman Nicholas Gore (Kingston, Jamaica) was the other UConn winner, beating Ryan Jursit at No. 4, 6-4, 3-6 and 7-5.  Sophomore Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) lost a tough 7-5, 7-5, decision at No. 5 to Guillermo Torres while junior John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) lost in three sets to Marwan Abaza at No. 1, 6-1, 3-6, 6-7 (3).

The Huskies will return to the court on Saturday, February 29 when they host Merrimack at the Tennis Club of Windsor at 1 pm.
