Five Teams Honored With NCAA Public Recognition Award

STORRS, Conn. - The University of Connecticut men's and women's tennis teams, men's basketball, men's golf and men's hockey teams were honored on Tuesday with NCAA Public Recognition Awards for outstanding academic performance.

Teams are recognized with the Public Recognition Award by the NCAA for posting Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores that are in the top 10 percent nationally of their individual sport. The APR is an annual scorecard of academic achievement calculated for all Division I sports teams nationally. All Division I teams' APR scores will be released May 19.

The latest APR scores cover a four-year period from 2015-16 to 2018-19.

"The academic performance of all our teams is a great source of pride to the University community but these five teams continue to perform at an elite level nationally," director of athletics David Benedict said.  "The commitment to academic excellence that these teams in particular continue to make is inspiring and I am proud to be associated with such exceptional student-athletes."

The men's golf team, under the direction of head coach Dave Pezzino, has been honored all 15 years that the APR program has existed.

The honor is the fourth in-a-row for the men's basketball team.

The men's hockey team was recognized for the second-straight time.

The women's tennis program, led by head coach and director of tennis Glenn Marshall, has been honored 12 consecutive times, while the men's tennis program was recognized for the sixth-straight year and seventh time overall.
