UCONN SWIMMING AND DIVING TEAMS EARN ACADEMIC HONORS
UConn Athletic Communications / June 22, 2021
RICHMOND, Va. – The UConn women's and men's swimming and diving teams again have proven that they are just as adept in the classroom as they are in the pool.
With impressive team grade point averages of 3.59 for the women and 3.47 for the men during last semester, both UConn teams have earned Scholar All-America honors, announced Tuesday by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The organization honored 721 teams from 426 colleges and universities.
"We are so proud of our programs' selections as Scholar All-American teams again," said UConn Coach Chris Maiello. "Our men's team GPA was the highest it has been in several semesters and our women's GPA was equally as strong.
"Academic performance at this level takes a strong commitment to academic goals, high character and a team culture that focuses on academic performance. It's just outstanding to have 39 of our student-athletes achieve over a 3.0 and 12 achieve a perfect 4.0."
Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the team only got the chance to compete in one dual meet in the spring semester before the BIG EAST Championship, yet the women's team finished second and gave league champ Villanova a run for the title.
The team earned praise from CSCAA Executive Director Greg Earhart.
"Coach Maiello did not let a difficult season stand in the way of success," Earhart said. "These are some of the best ambassadors of Connecticut and the university can and should be proud of these men and women."
"This semester was challenging in numerous ways," added Maiello. "But our student-athletes continue to find ways to perform at a high level in the classroom and in the pool. Hats off to them."
The CSCAA will name its individual Scholar All-America Team next week.
