MSOC wins third straight game

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's soccer team showed off their depth against the Central Connecticut State Blue Devils, winning 3-1 on Tuesday night. Sophomore forward Joey Saputo led the Huskies with two goals, pushing UConn to a 5-2 record, and their third straight win.

The Huskies opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Redshirt junior Greg Maclean scored his first career goal on a header in the box. Freshman defender Mikah Thomas whipped in a cross across the box that found the head of forward Adil Iggoute who headed the ball back across the face of goal right to an open Maclean, making it 1-0 Huskies.

UConn's only hiccup came in the 31st minute as Central Connecticut was awarded a penalty kick. UConn goalkeeper Clayton Knibbs was shown a yellow card for taking down a Blue Devil forward inside the 18 yard box. Austin Rocke scored the penalty for Central tying the game at one.

The Huskies found their game winner just before the halftime break in the 43rd minute. Saputo scored his first goal of the season off a header on another cross by Thomas in the box. This gave UConn a one goal lead heading into the half.

Saputo would seal the game in the 69th minute with his second goal of the night. Sophomore Eli Conway played a great pass across the face of goal to Saputo at the back post. The Montreal native tapped in his third career goal as a Husky, giving UConn some breathing room for the final 20 minutes of the match.

"I thought we did an okay job", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "It was a little inconsistent on our end, but we fought back, and we were able to get into halftime with a 2-1 lead."
