MSOC Suffers First Loss of Season at Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The UConn men's soccer team fell to the Vermont Catamounts, 1-0 on Tuesday night at Virtue Field.

The first 45 minutes of the match went scoreless with UConn leading Vermont in shots, 5-3 going into the half.

Vermont was awarded a penalty kick in the 61st minute on a handball in the box. UConn goalkeeper Max Kerkvliet came up big, saving the penalty kick, and keeping the game knotted at zero. Kervliet finished the match with three saves.

Vermont found a late winner in the 84th minute, handing the Huskies their first defeat of the season. This was the first goal UConn has conceded since their win at DePaul on September 20, equaling to 376 minutes of game time.

"It was a tough one tonight", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "Tonight felt like an NCAA Tournament game with the level and the intensity of the game. Got a bit unlucky there at the end, obviously give a lot of credit to Vermont for finding a way to win the game, but I thought our guys' effort and willingness to compete was pretty high."
