MSOC comeback falls just short at Seton Hall

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The UConn men's soccer team lost at Seton Hall, 4-2 on Saturday night. The Huskies mounted a late comeback in the second half, scoring two goals but fell just short of getting a result on the road.

The Pirates got off to a fast start scoring two goals in the first twenty minutes of the game and putting UConn in an early hole. Seton Hall's Hugo Gerbore opened the scoring in the 13th minute on a loose ball in the Huskies box, making it 1-0 Pirates.

Seton Hall wasted no time grabbing their second goal of the game just four minutes later in the 17th minute. The Pirate's Rikard Cederberg scored off a cross in the box, making it 2-0 Pirates.

The Huskies went into the halftime break down two goals but outshot the Pirates 9-2 in the first half.

Seton Hall made it 3-0 in what would prove to be the game winner in the 63rd minute as Cederberg scored his second goal of the night off a free kick.

The Huskies found a breakthrough in the 65th minute as defender Max Gummesson scored his first career goal in a UConn uniform. The freshman from Sweden got to a loose ball right in front of the Pirates goal, and buried UConn's first goal of the night.

UConn pulled to within one in the 83rd minute as midfielder Nicolas Tomerius headed home his first career goal. The sophomore got on the end of a cross from freshman defender Kieran Chandler, giving the Huskies seven minutes to find an equalizer.

Seton Hall would seal the game in the 89th minute as the Pirates were awarded a penalty kick for a challenge in the Huskies 18 yard box. Seton Hall's captain James Boote scored from the spot, putting the game out of reach for the Huskies.

"I thought we played well, obviously the score line doesn't say that", said head coach Chris Gbandi. "Give credit to Seton Hall, they did what they had to do making the most out of their opportunities early on. I thought the effort and intensity were there, it's just sometimes you have a game like that where things don't seem to go your way."
