UConn Falls at No. 25 Providence in BIG EAST Quarterfinal

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The UConn men's soccer team lost 2-0 to the Providence Friars in Saturday's BIG EAST Quarterfinal match at Chapey Field. 

Providence got off to a fast start tallying six shots through the first 25 minutes. UConn goalkeeper Max Kerkvliet did well to keep the Friars off the scoreboard, making three saves in the first half. Kerkvliet finished with five saves in the game. 

UConn settled in as the first half went on, recording three shots in the final 15 minutes. UConn's best chance of the half came off a free kick in the 35th minute as senior defender Jack Loura had an effort on goal saved by Providence goalkeeper Lukas Burns.

Both teams were awarded penalty kicks in the first half, but each call was overturned after VAR review by the official. 

The game was scoreless going into the halftime break, with shots on goal even at three a piece. 

Providence opened the scoring in the 53rd minute as Israel Neto scored his third goal of the season, putting the Friars ahead 1-0. 

Providence was awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute on a hand ball in UConn's box. Bruno Rosa converted from the spot, his fifth goal of the season, doubling the Friars lead, 2-0. 

UConn continued to push for a goal but could find a way through the Providence defense and Burns in goal.
