Head Coach Mike Cavanaugh Named Hockey East Coach of the Year

STORRS, Conn – The Hockey East Association in conjunction with Bauer has announced that UConn head coach Mike Cavanaugh has been named the Bob Kullen Coach of the Year for the 2024-25 season.

Cavanaugh, finished his 12th season on the bench at UConn, guided the Huskies back to TD Garden for the Hockey East Championship for the second time in program history and secured the programs first NCAA Tournament appearance and win.

The Huskies, picked eighth in the Hockey East preseason poll, rebounded in 2024-25 to secure their third 20-win season in the last four years. The Huskies set a program record with 23 wins, and  finished the season nationally ranked No. 7 in the USCHO Top-20 and were in the national polls for ten-straight weeks this season. The Huskies are also ranked seventh in the PairWise rankings, a program high. UConn has won 10 games over ranked opponents this year and are currently in the midst of an eight-game unbeaten streak.

The Huskies offense saw an uptick this season with sophomore Joey Muldowney setting the program record for goals in a season in the Hockey East era, and Hudson Schandor setting the program record for most assists in a season in the Hockey East era. UConn's penalty kill under Cavanaugh and staff is boasting an 81% kill rate and is tied for the nation lead with nine shorthanded goals.
