Huskies Push No.1 BC to the Brink
CHESTNUT Hill, Mass. - The UConn men's hockey team fell to no.1 Boston College 5-4 Saturday evening in the Hockey East Quarterfinal. The Huskies scored three goals in the third period, but Jack Malone of Boston College scored the eventual game winner midway through the third.
UConn dug themselves a hole quick as Boston College scored three goals in the first period. The Eagles opened the scoring two minutes into the start of the game. The Eagles followed up with another goal one minute later as sophomore Arsenii Sergeev could not hold onto the puck after making a save and Boston College was there to finish the play. Later in the period the Eagles caught Sergeev out of position and were able to net their third goal. The Huskies responded and cut into the Boston lead as Hudson Schandor found John Spetz for the goal.
In the second period, the Huskies had opportunities, but freshman goaltender Jacob Fowler held them scoreless. With 22 seconds remaining in the period, the Huskies were called for too many men on the ice and on the ensuing faceoff, Boston College scored to give them the three-goal lead heading into the third period.
The Huskies offense came alive in the third period. The Huskies exploded for three unanswered goals to tie the game. Freshman Jake Richard opened the scoring 11 seconds into the period, followed by two goals from sophomore Matthew Wood. It did not take long for Boston College to respond as they retook the lead four minutes later. The Huskies penalty kill was put to work late in the third period as two back-to-back penalties gave Boston College the five on three power play. Huskies locked down the Eagles defensively, successfully killing off the penalties. With time running down and following a Boston College penalty, the Huskies pulled Sergeev in favor of an extra skater but were unable to net the game tying goal.
With the loss, the Huskies season comes to an end. UConn finishes the season with a 15-20-2 overall record and a 9-14-1 record in Hockey East action.
