Huskies Advance to Hockey east Championship Game

Box Score

BOSTON, Mass. -  The UConn men's hockey will play for a Hockey East Championship Friday March 21 as they defeated Boston University in the Hockey East semi-finals by a final of 5-2. Joey Muldowney scored his third hat trick of the season for the Huskies while freshman Callum Tung made 25 saves.

The first period started with the Huskies generating scoring chances, but Boston University goaltender Mikhail Yegorov kept UConn from finding the back of the net. Following a UConn penalty, Boston University took the first lead of the game as Quinn Hutson was able to beat freshman Callum Tung on the power play. UConn had their own opportunities late on two power plays, but the Terriers penalty kill kept them scoreless as UConn entered the period break training by one.

The Huskies jumped the Terriers in the second period scoring back-to-back goals to take the 2-1 lead. UConn found the equalizer early as Tristan Fraser fired a puck at the net and after collecting his rebound, went top shelf to beat Yegorov. Shortly after the goal, Ryan Tattle was left alone on a breakaway and beat Yegorov to give UConn their second goal of the afternoon. The offense didn't stop there as Nick Carabin turned defense into offense and after a save by Yegorov, sophomore Joey Muldowney was in the right place at the right time for the put back and UConn's third goal of the afternoon. With the two-goal lead, the Huskies defense and freshman Callum Tung were steady, preventing the Terriers from cutting the lead to one. With time running down in the period, a UConn penalty put BU on the power play, but the Huskies killed off 20 seconds before the period ended.

The Huskies offense continued to fire on all cylinders as they added another goal early in the third period to extend their lead to three. The Huskies defense pressured the Terriers causing a turnover, and from there Jake Richard found Joey Muldowney in front for his second goal of the game and UConn's fourth of the afternoon. With five minutes left in the third, Boston University pulled Yegorov in favor of an extra skater.

The Huskies will await the winner of Northeastern and Maine.
