Huskies Skate to Tie vs. #10 BU
STORRS, Conn. - The UConn men's hockey team skated to a tie vs. no. 10 Boston University Tuesday evening. The back-and-forth game ended in a 2-2 tie with Boston University winning the shootout for the extra point in Hockey East Standings.
In the first period, the Huskies had the first opportunity to take the lead as a Boston University penalty gave them the man advantage early. While on the power play the Huskies were able to capitalize as Jake Richard picked up right where he left off from the Maine game and scored the power play goal to give UConn the 1-0 lead. UConn's penalty kill was tested in the first as two consecutive penalties were called on the Huskies, but the penalty kill unit worked through the adversity and killed off both penalties. Midway through the period, Boston University found the equalizer. Junior Tyler Muszelik made eight saves in the period while Mikhail Yegorov of Boston made 10.
The second period was a physical back and forth battle, but neither team was able to find the back of the net to take the lead. Both teams had numerous scoring chances, but the defenses stood strong keeping the game tied at one. In the second period Yegorov and Muszelik both made seven saves.
In Third period, UConn was able to regain the lead as the freshman were able to find the back of the net. Ethan Whitcomb found Kai Janviriya who found Ethan Gardula in front for the redirected shot and the goal. The Huskies were able to fend off the Terriers but following matching penalties on both teams, Boston University found the equalizer during 4 on 4 hockey tying the game at two and sending it to overtime.
In the overtime, both teams had opportunities to win the game, but the goaltenders shined, preventing either team from finding the back of the net. The best chance of the night came when Jake Richard batted a puck out of the air, but the Terriers netminder at the last second was able to get a stick on it, saving the goal. With neither team able to find the back of the net in the overtime period, the game officially ended in a tie, with Boston University winning the shootout for the extra hockey east point.
