Huskies Fall to Vermont in OT

HARTFORD, Conn. –  The UConn men's hockey team fell to Vermont Friday evening in overtime by a final of 1-0. Vermont's Axel Mangbo made 30 saves in the victory.

From first puck drop the Huskies and Catamounts were locked in a defensive battle as neither team was able to generate much offense early. The Huskies eventually found their stride as they were peppering shots at Vermont's Axel Mangbo, who stood strong keeping the Huskies scoreless. UConn had two opportunities to take the lead with the man advantage on the power play, but the Vermont penalty kill kept the game tied. Vermont's best chance of the afternoon came on a breakaway with time expiring in the first, but junior Tyler Muszelik was able to make the save to enter the break tied.

The second period followed the first, with neither team able to generate much offense. The Huskies best chance of the after came when sophomore Jake Richard fired a shot that rang off the crossbar and bounced out. The Huskies continued to battle, outshooting the Catamounts 20-8 after two periods, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.  The trend continued through the third period as neither team was able to find the game winning goal. UConn put 10 shots on goal in the period to Vermont's eight, but goaltenders turned away every shot faced.

In overtime, UConn looked prime to win it with multiple chances, but the Vermont defenders put their body on the line blocking all the Huskies shot. Following a Jake Percival penalty, Vermont would have the man advantage, and with the man advantage, scored the game winning goal with just 59 seconds left in OT.

UP NEXT: UConn will return to Storrs to wrap up the weekend series against the Catamounts. Puck drop is scheduled for 3pm and can be streamed live on ESPN+.
