Huskies Fall To #18 Massachusetts
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's hockey team fell to no.18 Massachusetts Friday afternoon by a final of 5-4. The Huskies led for the first two periods, but the Minutemen scored three goals in the third period to complete the come from behind victory.
The first period was all Huskies and sophomore Joey Muldowney. Muldowney got the Huskies on the board first as he took a feed from Jake Richard and was able to fire the back hand shot past UMass netminder Michael Hrabal for the goal. Shortly after Muldowney once again took a feed from behind the net and was able to put it top shelf for his second goal of the game. Massachusetts had an opportunity to get back into the game as two hooking penalties had the Huskies playing five on three, but the UConn penalty kill battled through two broken sticks to make the kill and keep UMass scoreless in the first period.
The Minutemen cut into the UConn lead early in the second period while on the power play. The Minutemen were able to catch Tyler Muszelik out of position following a rebound and found the back of the net for their first goal of the game. The Huskies were able to respond on the power play as freshman Ethan Whitcomb was able to pick his spot top left corner past Hrabal for the Huskies third goal of the game. It didn't take long for the Minutemen to respond as they were able to beat Muszelik off a deflection in front of the net. Both teams had chances to find the back of the net again however the defenses stood strong holding the score as is and UConn entered the locker room with a one goal lead.
The third period was all Massachusetts as they scored three goals within the first six minutes to take the 5-3 lead. A late tip in goal by Kaden Shahan cut the lead to one but the Huskies were unable to find the equalizer in the third as they fell by a final of 5-4.
UP NEXT: UConn will wrap up the weekend with a 3:30 puck drop vs. UMass Lowell at the XL Center in Hartford Saturday February 8.
