Three Huskies Finish in the Top-10 at Xavier Invitational

CINCINNATI, Ohio - The UConn men's golf team had a trio of golfers finish in the top-10 to lead the Huskies to a tie for third place at the Xavier Invitational presented by Gateway Logistics at Maketewah Country Club on Tuesday.

The Huskies shot 861 (297-275-289) to tie with Austin Peay State for third place in the 54-hole, two-day tournament on the par 70 course.  Host Xavier fielded an A and B squad for the event and both claimed the top-spot, shooting matching 855's. After shooting a 297 over the first 18-holes on Monday, the Huskies came roaring back in the second round in the afternoon as the only team to shoot under par, firing a 275 (-5).  The Huskies were the best team on the par 5's, finishing with a 4.47 average and -16 on those holes.

UConn was led by junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, CT) who took fourth in the field, shooting 212 (+2) to earn his best finishing of the season and his second top-10 finish of the fall.  Goode has been inside the top-20 in all four tournaments this fall.  He shot a 72 over his first 18-holes and answered that with a 66 on Monday afternoon, his lowest round of the season.  Goode finished out the tournament with a 74 on Tuesday.  He did his best work on the par 5's, averaging a 4.17 per hole and playing them at a -5 clip.  He now has six rounds this fall at par or better.

Senior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, MA) and sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, CT) both played their way to top-10 finishes as well.  Dennehy moved up five spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday to come home in a tie for seventh place.  He shot a 215 (76-68-71) to finish +5 for the tournament.  UConn led all teams with four eagles led by Dennehy who fired two himself. This was his second top-10 finish of the season and his third time in four tournaments in the top-20.

Sawka finished tied for 10th in the field, shooting 216 (74-67-75).  Sawka had his lowest round of the fall, shooting a three-under 67 in the second round on Monday.  He tied for fourth among all players with 11 birdies over the two days.  It was Sawka's first top-10 showing of the season.

Rounding out the UConn contingent was senior Eric Boulger (Walpole, MA) in a tie for 29th after shooing 221 (75-75-71) and classmate Vikram Konanki (Newton, MA) who was tied for 37th with a score of 223 (76-74-73). Freshman Matt Costello (Taunton, MA), playing as an individual, finished tied for 45th at 226 (72-75-79).

The Huskies will now turn their attention to their final event of the semester, wrapping up the fall by taking part in the Ka'anapali Classic in Maui, HI on November 2-4.
