UConn Golfers Head to Penn State for the Weekend

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn men's golf team is back in action this weekend in their final tournament before the BIG EAST Championship as they head to Penn State to play in the 48th Annual Rutherford Invitational.

The Huskies will face the host Nittany Lions along with Binghamton, Bucknell, Delaware, Long Island, Longwood, Oakland, Rhode Island, St. Bonaventure, Towson, and Western Carolina in the 54-hole, two day tournament at the Penn State Blue Course in State College, Pa.

The tournament gets underway on Saturday with 36-holes, teeing off at 7:30 am.  Play on the par 71, 7,130 yard course will conclude on Sunday with 18 holes to decide this year's champion.

UConn had a second place showing at last year's tournament, coming 10-strokes shy of tournament champ and host Penn State.

The Huskies are coming off a second-place finish at the Golfweek / Stifel Spring Challenge where junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, CT) and senior Vikram Konanki (Newton, MA) both grabbed top-10 finishes.  Goode tied his highest finish of the season and was under par in all three rounds, shooting a season low 208 (70-67-71), eight under. It was his third top-10 this season. He is tied with teammate sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, FL) with a team-low 72.0 per round average.

Konanki had a career-best performance, posting his highest career finish, lowest round and lowest three-round score.  Konanki tied for eighth in the field after shooting 210 (74-65-71) to finish six-under. His second round 65 was the lowest round of his four-year career and tied for the lowest round by a Husky this season.

Goode and Konanki will be joined in this week's lineup by Heard, sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, CT), senior Ray Dennehy (Princeton, NJ) and senior Trevor Lopez (Winchester, MA) playing as an individual.

Following this weekend's play the Huskies will turn their attention to the conference championship on April 26 through 28 at Callawassie Island Golf Club in Okatie, SC.
