Eight Wins and Counting - UConn Football’s Resurgence
Dear UConn fans,
The resurgence of our UConn football program continues under Head Coach Jim Mora. With the win at UMass over the weekend, the team finished the regular season with eight wins, the most since the 2010 season. Our Huskies are also bowl bound for the second time in the last three years. The last time this occurred was more than a decade ago.
This season's stats have reflected the upward trajectory of the program. On both sides of the ball, the Huskies have shown significant improvement. Offensively, the 388 total points are the fifth most points scored in school history and the most in one season since 2009. The team averaged 401 yards of total offense, the highest since 2017. This includes nearly 200 rushing yards per game, which is more than 60 yards better than last season. On defense, the Huskies have improved from 2023 in almost every major statistical category. Fewer passing yards, rushing yards and points have been allowed. The UConn defense is among the top 10 in the nation on 3rd downs, allowing just over 30% to be converted by our opponents.
On Sunday, December 8, bowl match-ups will be announced, and we anxiously await word of where the team will go. A bowl game will provide our Huskies with a chance to reach nine wins, which has only happened twice previously in our FBS history, the most recent of which was 2007. As in the past, your support of a UConn bowl appearance will mean so much to our student-athletes. Further, buying tickets through UConn and attending the bowl game will send a powerful message to the college football community about the strength of UConn Nation.
Lastly, I want to thank the many loyal donors and fans who have been part of our football journey. Our average home attendance was 25,375 this season, the highest figure we have seen since 2016. The continued escalation in attendance will be a huge factor in the positive momentum associated with our program. In addition, the Husky faithful has seen the significant impact of NIL. The ability to attract talented student-athletes to Storrs will be critical to our ongoing success. We are grateful for the substantial NIL support provided by contributors to our collective, Bleeding Blue for Good (BBFG), and encourage interested fans to visit www.bleedingblueforgood.org for more information on how you can make a difference.
On behalf of our coaches, staff and student-athletes, thank you for your commitment to UConn Athletics and our football program. Go Huskies!
Sincerely,
David Benedict
Director of Athletics
