Huskies Host Hoyas On Wednesday In Hartford
HARTFORD – The UConn men's basketball team (18-9, 10-6 BIG EAST) concludes its 2024-25 XL Center slate on Wednesday night when it hosts Georgetown (16-11, 7-9 BIG EAST) in downtown Hartford. The contest will tip at 6:30 p.m. and air on FS1 with Alex Faust and Donny Marshall on the call.
Wednesday night is Throwback Night in Hartford. Fans are encouraged to wear their best throwback UConn gear. There will also be $3 hot dogs, slices of pizza and soft drinks from doors at 5 p.m. until tip-off.
The Huskies are looking to sweep the season series with the Hoyas for fifth-straight year since returning to the BIG EAST in 2020-21 after a 68-60 win in DC on Jan. 11 made it nine-in-a-row against their longtime league rivals. UConn is now 39-36 all-time against Georgetown, taking the lead in the all-time series last year for the first time since a 3-2 edge held in 1973.
UConn is coming off a setback at No. 10 St. John's on Sunday, while the Hoyas are also looking to bounce back following a setback at Creighton on Sunday. Connecticut holds a three-game lead in the conference standings over Georgetown with four games to play and is jostling to clinch a top-four seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament.
Liam McNeeley leads UConn in scoring this season and has been sensational since returning from an injury suffered on Jan. 1. On the year McNeeley scores 15.4 points per game and is second on the squad with 6.7 rebounds per contest. In five games since his return from injury the 6-7 Texan is averaging 20.2 points and 9.2 rebounds, making him the only freshman in the country to rank top-five in both categories during that span. McNeeley is a six-time BIG EAST Freshman of the week, winning his second-straight on Monday.
Husky captain Alex Karaban continues to stuff the stat sheet with averages of 14.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.7 blocks per game. He hit a trio of 3-pointers on Sunday at The Garden and led the Huskies with 17 points, all but two coming after halftime. Solo Ball continues his breakout sophomore season as one of the country's elite shooters, scoring 14.7 points per game and shooting 43.2 percent from 3-point range. Samson Johnson is shooting what would be a program-record 76.6 percent from the floor and scores 7.6 points per game from the pivot spot along with backup Tarris Reed Jr., who posts averages of 9.4 points and a team-high 6.9 rebounds per game in 19.8 minutes per contest.
Georgetown sits at 16-11 on the year in Ed Cooley's second season on the Hilltop, checking in three back of UConn in the BIG EAST standings at 7-9 and with a top-40 defense per Kenpom. Micah Peavy has emerged as the top threat for the Hoyas and averages 16.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.7 assists per game in a league-high 36.6 minutes a night. The backcourt duo of Jayden Epps and Malik Mack both score 12.7 points per game. Star freshman Thomas Sorber adds 14.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest but was recently ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Following Wednesday night's match-up the Huskies hit the road for their final away game of the season at Providence on March 1.
