McNeeley Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

NEW YORK - UConn men's basketball freshman Liam McNeeley has been named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season, the league announced on Monday (Feb. 17). The honor for McNeeley comes after the freshman averaged team-highs of 24.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week.

McNeeley turned in one of the great freshman performances in Connecticut history in a win at No. 24 Creighton on Feb. 11, exploding for 38 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. It was the highest scoring output for any Husky in five years, highest for a UConn freshman since 1973 and set the single-game program record for a rookie in a BIG EAST game. He followed that up by narrowly missing his third-straight double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds on Saturday at Seton Hall.

In three contests since returning from an eight-game injury absence, McNeeley has posted averages of 22.3 points and 10.3 rebounds per game to boost his season scoring average to a team-best 15.1 points per game. He is shooting 37.5 percent from 3-point range and 85.0 percent from the free throw line on the year, adding 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 assists a night.

The Huskies return to action on Tuesday, Feb. 18 to host Villanova at the XL Center.
