No. 2 Huskies Head To Providence, Saturday Night
PROVIDENCE – The No. 2 UConn men's basketball team (27-3, 17-2 BIG EAST) looks to make history on Saturday when it travels to Rhode Island to take on local rival Providence (19-11, 10-9 BIG EAST) at the Amica Mutual Pavilion. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. on FOX Primetime Hoops with Gus Johnson and Jim Jackson on the call.
The Huskies are sitting on the cusp of a pair of major records, playing with a chance to set the BIG EAST record for conference wins and the UConn record for regular season wins. It also marks the regular season finale for Connecticut, which is already locked in to the top seed in the BIG EAST Tournament after winning its 11th regular season conference title.
UConn is 48-31 all-time in the series with its New England neighbors and has won three of the last four meetings, including a win in last year's BIG EAST Quarterfinals. Earlier this season the two sides met at Gampel Pavilion, with UConn coming away with a 74-65 victory on Jan. 31. Stephon Castle led the Huskies with 20 points in that contest, while Tristen Newton added a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.
The Huskies boast one of the most potent offenses in America this season thanks to great balance, as Connecticut is the only team in America with five players averaging at least 10 points and four rebounds per game. UConn leads the BIG EAST and is among the national leaders in assists per game, assist/turnover ratio, field goal percentage and scoring margin. Newton leads the squad with 15.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game. He is followed closely in the scoring column by Cam Spencer at 14.9 per game, with Spencer shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 46.0 percent from 3-point range – third in America.
Also in double-figures for Connecticut this season are Alex Karaban at 14.2 points per game, Donovan Clingan at 12.4 points per game and Stephon Castle at 11.3 per game. Clingan adds 6.9 rebounds and 2.2 blocks per game while shooting 62.8 percent from the floor, top-15 nationall. He also anchors a defense that ranks first in the BIG EAST in scoring defense (64.1 ppg) and field goal percentage defense (40.0 percent).
The Friars host the Huskies with a 19-11 record on the year and a 10-9 mark in BIG EAST play. Included in those marks is a sterling 14-3 record on their home floor in Providence. Devin Carter leads PC across the board with 19.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. Josh Oduro adds 16.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game while shooting 55.8 percent from the floor. Per Kenpom, Providence boasts a top-20 defense in the country.
Following the regular season finale on Saturday, UConn will be back in action at the BIG EAST Tournament. First up is a quarterfinal matchup against the No. 8 or No. 9 seed on Thursday, March 14 at noon.
