Huskies Top UMASS
STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team defeated the UMASS Minutewomen, 10-4 on Wednesday afternoon at Burrill Family Field. The win moves UConn to 22-13 overall this season.
Junior Hope Jenkins made her seventh start of the season in the circle for the Huskies. Jenkins went 5.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits, adding seven strikeouts, picking up her seventh win of the season.
UMASS opened the scoring in the top of the first inning with a run, giving the Minutewomen an early 1-0 lead.
Junior catcher Grace Jenkins gave the Huskies the lead in the bottom of the third inning, with her eleventh home run of the season, a three-run shot to center field, putting UConn in front, 3-1.
UMASS trimmed into UConn's lead in the top half of the fifth inning, scoring a run to make it 3-2.
UConn's offense responded right back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits. Junior infielder Kaiea Higa got it started with a double down the left field line, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. Senior infielder Rosie Garcia followed Higa with a sac fly to center field, scoring Grace Jenkins from third base. Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin kept the hit parade going with a single to center field, scoring Higa from third base. Freshman infielder Cat Petteys capped off the Huskies big inning with a double to right center, scoring Breslin all the way from first base, giving the Huskies a 7-2 lead.
Freshman Amber Bretton came on in relief for Jenkins the middle of the sixth inning, making her 11thappearance of the season. Bretton closed out the game in the circle for the Huskies, going 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits.
UMASS tacked on two runs in the sixth inning, trimming into the UConn lead, 7-4.
The Huskies offense once again responded, punching right back for three runs, putting the game out of reach for the Minutewomen. Grace Jenkins drove in her fourth run of the game with a double to left center, scoring Hastings from second base. Higa delivered back to back doubles for the Huskies, scoring Jenkins from second base and giving Higa her first career three-hit game. Later in the inning, Breslin plated the Huskies tenth run of the game with a single to center field, scoring pinch runner Rayah Snyder from third base.

- Grace Jenkins recorded her team leading 11th multi-RBI game this season, her second time plating four RBI in a game this year. Her 46 runs batted in this season is just one shy of the single season program record (47, Karin Muller, 1996).
- Kaiea Higa extended her hitting streak to 12 straight games, notching her first career three-hit game, giving her 13 multi-hit games this season.
- Kaitlyn Breslin recorded her 10th multi-hit and 9th multi-RBI games this season. Breslin has hits in 11 of her last 12 games.
- Cat Petteys recorded her 10th multi-hit game this season and has 14 hits in her last ten games.
