Lacrosse Heads to USA Lacrosse Facility for Top-25 Showdown with James Madison

STORRS-  UConn lacrosse will play their first game away from home this weekend, traveling to the USA Lacrosse Facility in Sparks, Maryland for a top 25 neutral site showdown with #22 James Madison University on Saturday afternoon. The Huskies entered the IWLCA Top 25 on Monday, checking in at #24.

Last Matchup: When these two teams last squared off in 2024, JMU held off a ferocious Husky comeback in Sparks, defeating UConn last February 15-14. UConn fell behind 10-4 in the first half and came up short after an offensive breakout of seven goals in the fourth quarter. JMU leads the all-time series 9-2, with the last UConn win coming on 2/21/16.

UConn Snapshot:

The Huskies continued their hot start to the season with an explosive 18-5 win over Fairfield on Wednesday afternoon in Storrs. Rayea Davis poured in a career-high six goals. Davis has found the back of the net 9 times already in 2025. On the defensive end, Abby Beran chipped in a career-high 8 draw controls in the win. Beran was one of three Huskies to score their first career goal on Wednesday, along with first year players Megan O'Brien and Anna Magennis. Ava Plata joined the fray on the offensive end, with her three goals on Wednesday setting a new career high. Grad transfer goalkeeper Tori Cini moved to 2-0 in her first two games at UConn, notching 13 saves in the two Husky wins. Through two games, the Huskies have a perfect clear percentage, going 35/35 on the season so far

JMU Snapshot:

Following a loss to #3 UNC in their season opener, the Dukes avoided an 0-2 start to the season on Wednesday at Virginia Tech, coming back from seven goals down to take down the Hokies 15-11 in Blacksburg. Preseason AAC Attack Player of the Year Maddie Epke was instrumental in the win, with a career-high 9 points (6 goals and 3 assists) and 14 draw controls. Savannah Derey joined Epke in the comeback effort, with a career-high 6 goals of her own. The Dukes gave up 8 goals in the first quarter, subbing in Adanya Moyer who got the win after only conceding 3 goals in the final three periods. JMU was the unanimous preseason selection in the AAC coaches' poll, after going 14-6 overall in 2024. The Dukes made the NCAA Tournament in 2024, advancing to the second round. JMU had five selections to the preseason all-conference team. Epke was joined by Maggie Clark, Olivia Mattis, Ava Bleckley, Caitlin Boden, and Preseason Defensive Player of the Year Carolyn Thistlewaite. James Madison is led by Coach Shelley Klaes, who is now in her 19th season at her alma mater, compiling a 232-100 record.
