Hamilton, N.Y.- The UConn volleyball team carried over the relentless momentum from last night's magical comeback, defeating Stony Brook University in their second match of the Ellis Rowland Memorial Tournament in four sets, winning their fifth match in a row.
A combination of 3 kills from Jess Perry, and multiple errors from the Sea Wolves got the Huskies started with an early 9-6 advantage in the first set. UConn capitalized more on the Stony Brook miscues throughout the first set, using the errors and contributions from Perry, Audrey Rome, and Doga Kutlu to take a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. Perry and Rome continued to put the pressure on Stony Brook throughout the frame, with Emma Werkmeister and Taylor Pannell finishing the first set for the Huskies, 25-20.
Pannell kept up the strong offensive attack with 3 early kills for the Huskies in the second set, as UConn and Stony Brook went back and forth to a slim Sea Wolves one point lead. Big effort plays by Ayva Cebollero and McKenna Brand gave the Huskies the lead right back, rattling off four UConn points in a row. Attack errors continued to plague Stony Brook, with UConn taking advantage late in the set to take a 21-19 lead. The Sea Wolves battled back to even up the match, taking the second set 25-23.
Werkmeister and Pannell each chipped in two kills in the early going of the third set. UConn and Stony Brook traded points throughout the set, with service errors continuing to frustrate both sides as the Sea Wolves took a slim 15-14 lead. The Huskies continued to fight back, with a five point-run to put them in the driver's seat in the third set. Three kills from Werkmeister, and a timely ace from Brenna Wyman gave UConn the lead in the frame. The Huskies took the third set 25-23, finished off by a Werkmeister kill.
The Huskies and Sea Wolves traded points in the fourth set with UConn looking to close out the match. Four Huskies chipped in kills to get the team off to a good start, balanced by Perry, Werkmeister, and Pannell. Audrey Rome's back to back kills and a handful of Stony Brook errors gave UConn a lead later in the fourth. Werkmeister poured in her final two kills of the match to lift the Huskies to a four-set victory, moving them to 5-0 on the season.
Up Next: The Huskies wrap up their tournament matches against Buffalo, Sunday at 11am. Stony Brook will take on host Colgate at the conclusion of UConn's match.
