Lacrosse Punches Ticket to BIG EAST Tournament, Defeating Georgetown in Finale
STORRS, Conn.- UConn women's lacrosse clinched their spot in the BIG EAST Tournament Saturday afternoon, taking down Georgetown 15-9 on senior day in Storrs.
How it Happened:
Tori Cini (Syosset, N.Y.) got senior day started with three quick saves to keep Georgetown off the board in the opening minutes. Emma Dacey (Hopkinton, Mass.) got the Huskies on the board first with her 21st goal of the season. Karsyn Burnash (Adams Center, N.Y.) doubled the UConn lead on the woman-up advantage after a Hoya green card. Eliza Bowman (Darien, Conn.) scored a goal on her senior day to extend Husky lead to 3-0. Both sides traded goals, with Ava Plata (Orchard Park, N.Y.) and Jenna Giardina (South Salem, N.Y.) responding to each Hoya comeback attempt. Georgetown scored the first goal of the second half to close the gap to 5-3. That would be as close as the Hoyas would get the rest of the day, as UConn exploded for a 7-0 run.
Giardina found the back of the net for the second time of the afternoon. Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.) scored two goals in the third quarter, sandwiching an Anna Magennis goal as UConn escalated the advantage to 8-3. Dacey converted a ridiculous behind her head goal, and Kelsey Neary and Plata rifled goals past the Hoya defense to send the Huskies to the fourth quarter ahead 12-4.
Giardina scored her third goal of the game, responding to a quick flurry of Georgetown goals to keep UConn ahead 13-7. The visitors would not go down quietly, rattling off six of the next seven goals to close the gap to 13-9 late in the fourth. Burnash shut the door with two goals in the final minute and change to send the Huskies to Philly for the BIG EAST Tournament on Thursday.
Up Next: UConn will wait to see who they face in the BIG EAST Tournament semifinal game on Thursday, May 1st. The tournament will be hosted by Villanova University.
