HookC Wins Sixth Straight, Beats Villanova, 8-2
STORRS, Conn. - In front of a season-best 1047 fans on Friday night, the UConn baseball team (23-18, 8-2 BIG EAST) defeated Villanova, 8-2, in its series opener at Elliot Ballpark.
UConn starter Stephen Quigley was superb on the hill with eight shutout innings with just two hits allowed, zero walks and season-high eight strikeouts.
Luke Broadhurst quickly got the Huskies on the scoreboard with a long two-run home run in the first inning to make it 2-0. It is the team-leading 11th home run from Broadhurst this season and marks the 13th-straight game UConn has homered.
T.C. Simmons added to the lead with a two-out RBI single in the second to make it 3-0.
In the third, the Huskies broke the game open with a five-run frame. Bryan Padilla, Caleb Shpur and Paul Tammaro delivered RBI singles while Jake Studley provided a two-run base hit in the frame.
Shpur recorded a multi-hit performance that extended his hit streak to 15 games and reach base streak to 20.
Tammaro, Padilla and Maddix Dalena all posted multi-hit performances and all nine starters notched at least a hit.
The Huskies have won a season-high six games in a row and have won 13 of their last 15 games.
The series resumes tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. at Elliot Ballpark with tomorrow's promotion being nine innings of winnings.
