Track & Field Repeats for Third-Straight Dual BIG EAST Indoor Championships
2024 Indoor BIG EAST Championships Final Results
CHICAGO – The University of Connecticut men's and women's track & field teams defended their title to claim the third-straight BIG EAST Indoor Championship trophy. The men finished with a team total score of 237 (meet record) and the women finished with a team total score of 168 in the two-day championship event in Chicago at Dr. Conrad Worrill Track & Field Center.
"It was an excellent weekend for the program," said Director of Track & Field Beth Alford-Sullivan. "We executed our goals and went in to defend our titles. We knew we had the opportunity to crack the high point score on the men's side after day one, so I was excited to see our men so competitive and composed through the weekend and to put up numbers like that. Our women also were just very competitive and composed with a championship mentality from when we left campus to the time we got back home late. I'm really proud how the program is evolving into true spirit of competition on the conference level."
In total, there were 12 medals awarded for the men and nine medals awarded for the women. On top of that, there were 57 top-five results, 12 gold medal winners, and 12 personal records that placed in the top-five. Along with that, there were four event sweeps in the men's long jump, the women's pole vault, the men's high jump, and the men's triple jump.
The UConn men defeated runner-up Butler while the UConn women outscored Villanova to claim the trophy once again. For the UConn men, this is the 12th BIG EAST Indoor Championship in program history (2024, 2023, 2022, 2013, 2011, 2009, 2008, 2006, 2004, 2002, 1997, 1980) and gives them six-straight indoor or outdoor titles since UConn returned to the BIG EAST Conference. The Husky women claim the program's fifth BIG EAST Indoor title (2024, 2023, 2022, 2009, 2008) and fifth-straight conference crown since the return to the league.
The two programs claimed matching BIG EAST titles for the sixth-time in the UConn track & field program history - 2024 (Indoor), 2023 (Indoor & Outdoor), 2022 (Indoor & Outdoor) and 2008 (Indoor). The Huskies will head to the 2024 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships this spring looking to accomplish that dual feat for the third-straight year as well as claim a third-straight combined conference season sweep.
For the women, Jasmine Barrow was named the Co-High Point Performer of the Meet and was also named the Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events. Barrow along with Georgetown's Maya Drayton and Villanova's Jane Livingston all shared the honor after posting 20.0 individual points.
Barrow took the gold in both the women's long jump and triple jump, with a 6.09m mark in the long jump and a 13.04m finish in the triple jump. She is the second consecutive Husky to earn the outstanding field performer honor after A'liyah Thomas earned the recognition last year.
UConn and Villanova both claimed four titles on the weekend with Alyssa Elliott (Pentathlon), Barrow (Long Jump, Triple Jump), and Mallory Malz (Pole Vault) all claiming gold.
On the men's side, the Huskies won the most individual events at the meet with seven. Individual gold medalists for the Huskies included Josh Mooney (Heptathlon), Anish Rajamanickam (400m), Mawali Osunniyi (High Jump), Marc Morrison (Long Jump), Travis Snyder (Pole Vault), Nicholas Connolly (Shot Put), and Kyle Johnson (Triple Jump).
UConn's Kasey Savage was announced as the High Point Performer of the Meet on the men's side for the third straight season, earning 20.0 points. Savage placed second in the triple jump (14.86m), third in the high jump (2.01m), and third in the long jump (7.24m). Also for the Huskies, Kyle Johnson received the Men's Most Outstanding Performer in Field Events award, earning the gold in the triple jump and silver in the long jump.
