Riley Daly Named BIG EAST Preseason Defensive Player of the Year
STORRS, Conn.- Senior Defender and 2025 Captain Riley Daly (Ipswich, Mass.) was named BIG EAST Preseason Defender of the Year, announced by the conference on Wednesday.
Daly was a unanimous all BIG-EAST First Team selection in 2024, starting in all 18 games for the Huskies. In her junior year, Daly recorded 43 draw controls, 32 ground balls, and 21 turnovers caused. Daly was named to the IWLCA Northeast All-Region Second Team and earned IWLCA Academic Honor Squad honors as well.
Joining Daly on the preseason All- BIG EAST Team are Sophomore Defender Abby Beran (Wading River, N.Y.) and R-Junior Attacker Rayea Davis (Henrietta, N.Y.), both unanimous selections.
Beran was named to the all-BIG EAST First Team in her freshman season, winning BIG EAST Freshman of the Week 3 times, also being named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team. Beran notched 43 draw controls, 24 ground balls and caused 23 turnovers.
Davis returns after finishing second on UConn in goals last season (44), recording 17 assists as well. The significant amount of offensive production secured Davis unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team Honors.
The Huskies were selected 2nd in the BIG EAST Preseason Poll with 31 points, receiving one first place vote. UConn comes in behind four-time defending champions Denver, who received 35 points (5 first place). Villanova finished in third with 24 points (1 first place), receiving the other first place vote.
UConn opens the 2025 season Saturday, February 8th at 1pm in Storrs against Drexel.
