Alex Heard Headed to the NCAA Amherst Regional

STORRS, Conn. - UConn sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, FL) will be headed to Amherst, Virginia to compete in the 2025 NCAA Men's Golf Regional as the field for this year's NCAA Championship was announced on Wednesday.  Heard will compete as one of 10 individuals in the Amherst Regional on May 12-14 at the Poplar Grove Golf Club.

Heard earned his spot in this year's field by way of taking home the 2025 BIG EAST Individual Championship at last weekend's conference tournament. The sophomore earned his first collegiate victory and did so by posting the best scores of his young career. He was under par for all three rounds, finishing with at career-low score of 205 (71-66-68) and his second-round score of 66 marked a new career low as well. He became the third Husky to win individual medalist honors in the conference championship and first since Caleb Manuel captured the title in 2022. Brian Ahern took home the top-spot in 1994.

The NCAA announced the field for the six 54-hole regional tournaments on Wednesday. Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams. Heard will be competing in a field led by number one seeded LSU and Oklahoma, Vanderbilt, Pepperdine (West Coast Conference Champ), Tennessee, Arizona, Stanford, Wake Forest, Arkansas, Florida Gulf Coast, Kent State (MAC Champ), Princeton (Ivy Champ), and Howard (NEC Champ). 

The individual field will be made up of Heard and Andrew Swanson of Clemson, Kaleb Wilson of West Viriginia, Ike Joy of Liberty, Emil Riegger of Maryland, Peicheng Chen of St. John's, Sakke Siltala of Texas State, Henric Bjelke of Campbell, Colin Dutton of UNCG, and Nolan Schuermann.

Heard will head to the NCAA's as the Huskies' top-scorer this season, with a 71.4 scoring average. He's had a tremendous spring season with three top-10 finishes capped by his BIG EAST win. He has posted 16 of his 25 rounds this season at par or better.

The top five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the finals which are scheduled for May 23-28 at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, California.
