Huskies Wrap Up Season Opening Doc Gimmler Red & Black
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The UConn men's golf team got their first tournament of the season under their belts, wrapping up play at The Doc Gimmler Red & Black on Tuesday at the Bethpage State Park Red and Black Course.
UConn finished eighth at the event, posting a three-round score of 873 (+29). The Huskies posted scored of 278 and 281 over Monday's two rounds on the par 70, 7,092-yard Red Course. UConn rounded out the event with a 314 on Tuesday with play shifting to the historic par 71, 7,468-yard Black Course. The tournament used the premier Black Course, site of U.S. Open and PGA Championship tournaments as well as the home of the 2025 Ryder Cup, for the first time in 28 years.
Junior Connor Goode (Glastonbury, Conn.) led the UConn contingent, tying for 20th overall in the field, shooting a three-round score of 219. Goode shot a one-under 69 during his first round and then posted a 72 and a 78 on the final day.
Sophomore Alex Heard (Boca Raton, Fla.), sophomore Bradley Sawka (Ellington, Conn.) and senior Ray Dennehy all tied for 24th overall with matching totals of 220. Heard and Sawka both played three-under through two rounds. Heard shot a 67 in round one and a par 70 in round two. He came back Tuesday on the Black Course and played to an 83. Sawaka shot a par 70 in round one and three-under 67 in round two. He also shot 83 on Tuesday.
Dennehy shot 72 and 73 in his two rounds on Monday and was the lowest scoring Husky on Tuesday, carding a 75. He was tied for the ninth lowest score in the field on the Black Course.
Freshman Matt Costello (Taunton, Mass.) tied for 35th in his first collegiate event, shooting consecutive rounds of 72 on the Red Course and a 78 on Tuesday on the Black Course.
Senior Trevor Lopez (Winchester, Mass.) playing as an individual, was 60th with a score of 231 (74-71-86).
The Huskies are back in action when they host the UConn Invitational at GreatHorse in Hampden, MA on September 29 through October 1.
