WSOC Drops NCAA Second Round Match To Stanford
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The UConn women's soccer team (14-5-4) led for the majority of its NCAA Second Round against No. 3 seeded Stanford but ultimately fell, 2-1, at Razorback Field on Friday evening.
UConn jumped out to an early advantage on a strike from sophomore Anaya Johnson in the 11th minute. The Brampton, Ontario native won a 50-50 ball, got into space and rifled a brilliant ball into the left side of the net.
Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Mahoney and the UConn defense were strong throughout the match, forcing tough opportunities for the Cardinal offense. Mahoney finished the match with seven saves.
The score remained 1-0 Huskies until the 4:03 mark left in regulation. Stanford was able to tie the game and then take its first lead with 31 seconds remaining in the match.
UConn finishes the year with its first BIG EAST Tournament Championship since 2004 and first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2016.
The Huskies also won its first NCAA Tournament game since 2016 and their 14 wins were the most for a Connecticut squad since the 2016 campaign.
