Huskies Fall in Game 2, Split Weekend Series vs. #15 UMass Lowell
LOWELL, Mass. – The UConn men's hockey team dropped game two of the two game series vs. UMass Lowell Saturday evening by a final of 1-0. UMass Lowell found the back of the net late in the first period, and that would prove to be enough to secure the victory and split the weekend series.
The first period was a physical battle once again. Through 10 minutes both teams had minimal shots on goal as the defenses shined. Following a hooking penalty on freshman Ethan Whitcomb, the River Hawks were playing with a man advantage and while on the power play was able to find the back of the net to take the 1-0 lead. UConn looked to respond and had their best chance of the night late in the period, but a shot rang off the post and out, and the Huskies entered the period break trailing by one.
After two periods there was no change as UMass Lowell entered the period break leading by one. The Huskies had the opportunities to find the equalizer but were unable to convert. The Huskies outshot the River Hawks 21 to 14, but UMass Lowell held the edge with 11 shots on goal to UConn's nine. Due to a Ryan Tattle penalty with 22 seconds remaining in the second period, the Huskies were forced to close the period a man down.
The Huskies penalty kill was featured multiple times in the third period and shut the River Hawks down each time. The Huskies were battling to find the game tying goal but UMass Lowell netminder Beni Halasz stood strong in net, turning away every shot he faced. With 2:33 minutes remaining in the third period, UConn pulled their netminder in favor of an extra skater looking to find the equalizer. The Huskies were unable to find the back of the net with the extra attacker, as they would drop game two by a final of 1-0 and split the weekend series with UMass Lowell.
