No. 2 UConn to Face No. 14 North Carolina Friday
STORRS, Conn. – The No. 2 UConn women's basketball team (2-0) faces its first ranked opponent of the season as the Huskies take on No. 14 North Carolina (3-0) Friday at 6 p.m. in First Horizon Coliseum. The game will air on ESPN2 and the UConn Sports Network (FOX Sports 97-9).
UConn beat South Florida, 86-49, last Sunday in Gampel Pavilion. Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting. Sophomore Ashlynn Shade notched 12 of her 15 points in the second half while freshman Sarah Strong scored nine of her 13 points in the final 20 minutes.
North Carolina moved to 3-0 with a 66-47 win over North Carolina A&T on Tuesday. Lexi Donarski leads the Tar Heels with 15.0 points per game while Alyssa Ustby is averaging 10.7 points and 8.7 rebounds. Head coach Courtney Banghart is in her sixth season at North Carolina.
UConn is 9-5 all-time vs. North Carolina, and the Huskies have won the last six matchups between the teams. The Huskies and Tar Heels faced off last season at Mohegan Sun, a 76-64 win for UConn. Redshirt senior Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 26 points, four blocks and three steals in the game.
UConn freshman Sarah Strong is a native of Durham, N.C., which is about 55 miles east of Greensboro.
UConn Athletics will celebrate head coach Geno Auriemma and associate head coach Chris Dailey's 40th season in Storrs in 2024-25 and honor their legacies and major milestones with several initiatives throughout the year.
The Huskies' primary celebration will take place during UConn's game vs. Fairleigh Dickinson on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Gampel Pavilion. All student-athletes who played for Auriemma and Dailey are invited back to campus as the program celebrates their four decades of their success.
Auriemma is currently at 1,215 career wins. He currently ranks second in Division I college basketball history, just behind recently retired Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer (1,216).
The UConn Dairy Bar is featuring three specials in honor of Geno and CD for the month of November. Fans can try Legend-Berry Legacy ice cream at both the Dairy Bar and Gampel games, as well as Geno's Champion-Chip Sundae and CD's Peanut Butter Dream milkshake.
Fans can tune into Setting the Standard, a five-part docuseries that tells the story of Auriemma and Dailey's 40 years at UConn. The first four episodes are available to stream now at UConnPlus.tv, with the final episode released Nov. 19.
UConn is ranked second in both the AP and WBCA preseason polls.
