Huskies sweep doubleheader against Georgetown, Secure series win

STORRS, Conn. – The UConn softball team swept their doubleheader against the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday at Burrill Family Field. UConn edged out the Hoyas in game one in a pitcher's duel, 2-1. The Huskies powered past Georgetown in game two in a five inning run rule, 12-4. 

Game One

Junior Hope Jenkins made her 10th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies in game one. Jenkins went the distance in the circle, tossing her first complete game this season. The California native gave up just one run on five hits, adding four strikeouts, picking up her 11th win of the season. 

Georgetown opened the scoring in the top of the second inning off a solo home run, giving the Hoyas a 1-0 lead. 

UConn responded in the bottom of the second inning with a run of their own off the bat of junior utility Haley Coupal as she singled to right field, scoring Kaiea Higa from third base, tying the game at 1-1.

Jenkins settled in after the solo homer, retiring 18 out of the last 20 Hoya hitters from the second inning on. 

Sophomore outfielder Kaitlyn Breslin delivered the big hit for the Huskies in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out solo home run, her 15th of the season, giving UConn the lead for good, 2-1. 

News and Notes

  • Hope Jenkins tossed her first complete game this season in the circle, throwing just 80 pitches across seven innings. Jenkins retired 18 out of the last 20 Georgetown hitters. She moves to 11-2 this season.
  • Haley Coupal has tallied an RBI in her last three straight games. 
  • Kaitlyn Breslin hit her 15th home run of the season.
  • This is the 13th time this season the UConn pitching staff has limited opponents to one run or less. 
  • Grace Jenkins had her ten game hit streak snapped. 
  • Cat Petteys had her six game hit streak snapped.

Game Two

Graduate student Payton Kinney made her 19th start of the season in the circle for the Huskies in game two. Kinney went 4.0 innings giving up just one run on four hits with four strikeouts, picking up her 10th win of the season. 

Georgetown once again opened the scoring in the top of the second inning with a solo home run, putting the Hoyas in front, 1-0. 

The UConn offense responded in a big way in the bottom half of the second inning, scoring eight runs on seven hits, giving the Huskies a commanding 8-1 lead. 

Haley Coupal kick started the Huskies rally with a single to right field, scoring Kaitlyn Breslin from second base. Junior outfielder Kaitlyn Kibling followed Coupal with a single to second base, scoring Cat Petteys from third base. UConn scored their third run of the inning playing small ball with a bunt squeeze play with runners on the corners. Freshman catcher Heidi Barber dropped a perfect bunt down the first base line, allowing Coupal from third base. A batter later, junior catcher Grace Jenkins knocked in Kibling from third base with a single down the right field line. Junior infielder Kaiea Higa followed Jenkins with a single to center field, scoring Lexi Hastings from third base. Senior infielder Rosie Garcia scored Jenkins with another single to center field. Freshman infielder Cat Petteys capped off the Huskies big inning at the plate with a two-run double down the left field line, scoring Higa and Garcia. 

UConn put the game out of reach for Georgetown in the fourth inning with one swing as Coupal hit a grand slam, the first home run of her career, extending the Huskies lead to 12-1. 

Redshirt-sophomore Sydnee Koosh came on in relief for Kinney in the fifth inning, making her 23rd appearance this season in the circle. 

Georgetown didn't go quietly, hitting a three-run home run in the fifth inning to make it 12-4, but the deficit proved to be too large for the Hoyas as the Huskies locked down the final three outs, securing their sixth run rule victory this season. 

News and Notes

  • Seven Huskies recorded RBIs. 
  • Haley Coupal recorded a career game high, five RBI, hitting her first career home run, a grand slam into the Storrs night. Coupal now has two multi-RBI and seven multi-hit games this season. She has ribbies in four straight games for the Huskies. 
  • Cat Petteys recorded her 15th multi-hit and 8th multi-RBI games this season. Petteys reached base safely in all three of her plate appearances. 
  • Kaiea Higa recorded her 14th multi-hit game this season. 
  • Kaitlyn Breslin recorded her 16th multi-hit game this season. Breslin has five hits in her last three games. 
  • Grace Jenkins reached base safely for the 22nd game in a row. 
  • Lexi Hastings reached base safely for the 17th game in a row.
